The Nashville Film Festival (NashFilm) today announces four films selected for the 53rd annual event, September 29 through October 5, 2022, marking the first film selections to be made public since the organization announced plans to open this year’s festival with the Nashville premiere of The Return of Tanya Tucker. In a preview of what’s to come when organizers announce the festival’s full program in late August, four official selections are confirmed to screen at the upcoming festival. They are:
- THE YEAR BETWEEN (dir. Alex Heller) – Clemence Miller is coming home to live in her family’s basement after dropping out of college with a newly diagnosed mental illness. Having to face her battered relationships and responsibilities of adulthood, she is driving everyone around her… crazy. Starring Steve Buscemi, J. Smith Morgan (“Succession”)
- ACIDMAN (dir. Alex Lehmann) – Maggie tracks down her estranged and reclusive father Lloyd; together they attempt to make first contact. Starring Dianna Agron, Thomas Hayden Church.
- BUTTERFLY IN THE SKY (dir. Bradford Thomason, Brett Whitcomb) – Chronicles the journeys of broadcasters, educators and filmmakers who believed television could inspire a lifelong love of reading. Features LaVar Burton.
- THE CIVIL DEAD (dir. Clay Tatum) – A misanthropic, struggling photographer just wants to watch TV and eat candy while his wife is out of town, but when a desperate old pal resurfaces, his plans are thwarted, with spooky consequences.
“We’re always encouraged by the talent, innovation and creativity evident in the thousands of film submissions we receive each year,” said Programming Director Lauren Ponto. “The four films included in today’s preview are just a glimpse of our exciting full slate, one that’s sure to have something for everyone.”
Each of the four films announced today will screen in-person at one of the festival’s select venues, previously announced as the Belcourt Theater, the TPAC Andrew Johnson Theater and the historic Franklin Theatre. A portion of this year’s full program will be available to screen virtually for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of home.

Beyond the traditional film festival, which is slated to feature 125 feature-length and short films across every genre, NashFilm will again host events and programs that highlight the many aspects of filmmaking, including: a Screenwriting Competition (September 30-October 6); a Music Program (virtual panels, workshops and more, September 29-October 1); the Creators Conference (film industry panels and conversations, September 30 – October -2); and live music performances and new artist showcases throughout the week.
