Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Melissa Fumero and Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s J.B. Smoove along with Television Academy Chairman and CEO, Frank Scherma announced the nominations for the 74th Annual Emmy Awards during a live virtual event this morning. The 74th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live from Microsoft Theater on NBC on Monday, September 12th at 8pm EST and will stream live for the first time on Peacock. The 2022 Creative Arts Emmy Awards will take place at the Microsoft Theater over two consecutive nights on Saturday, September 3rd, and Sunday, September 4th . An edited presentation will be aired Saturday, September 10th, at 8:00 PM EDT/PDT on FXX. Reese Witherspoon and Nashville‘s Connie Britton are among the nominees this year. Succession holds this year’s top spot with 25 nominations followed by Ted Lasso and The White Lotus, each with 20 nominations, Hacks and Only Murders in the Building with 17 nominations and Euphoria with 16. Squid Games received 14 nominations, the most ever for a foreign language show. There were a few snubs as well as surprises that we will unpack before we get to the nominees.
Snubs -FX’s Atlanta is missing from the Outstanding Comedy category despite multiple nominations it’s first two season and critical acclaim for it’s third season – star Donald Glover was nominated in the acting and directing categories. Two of FX’s other series, Better Things, and Reservation Dogs were completely ignored. Noticeably missing is Selena Gomez. Her show, Only Murders in the Building and co-stars were nominated. Also one of the most popular shows on television, Yellowstone was nowhere to found among the nominees – not even in the technical awards. Ouch!!! Many thought Kelly Reilly (Yellowstone) deserved a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. AND superstar, Kevin Costner (Yellowstone) was NOT nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series category. Samuel L. Jackson’s work in The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey was not recognized in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category. Another snub that hurt was Jennifer Aniston for The Morning Show given she was nominated last year, also see below. Oscar winners, Julia Roberts and Sean Penn were not nominated for Gaslit. The cast and crew for the final seasons of black-ish, Insecure, and This is Us were not among the nominees this year after multiple nominations over the years. Speaking of, five-time nominee, Trace Ellis Ross was not on the ballot for her work on black’ish. Many thought Mandy Moore (This Is Us) was a shoo-in for a nomination in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. Adrienne Warren, Women of the Movement and Jessica Chastain, Scenes From a Marriage failed to be recognized in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie category. Britt Lower, Severance was not nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. Giancarlo Esposito and Jonathan Banks both from Better Call Saul weren’t nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category. Also missing were Maid in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category. Some critic feels that HBO Max’s Station Eleven and it’s leading lady, Mackenzie Davis should have been nominated in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and Outstanding Lead Actress categories.
Surprises – Hulu’s The Great was not nominated in the Outstanding Comedy category but both leads, Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult were. Twitter favorite and hopefully Emmy favorite, Sydney Sweeney was nominated twice! For The White Lotus and Euphoria. I love Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show) but the industry was a little surprised at her nomination. After five seasons and into the first half of the final season, Rhea Seehorn for Better Call Saul is finally nominated. Christopher Walken’s performance in Severance earned him his second Emmy nomination. Impeachment: American Crime Story wasn’t a huge hit nor did it generate a lot of praise from the critics so it is a pleasant surprise to see star, Sarah Paulson among the nominees. Abbott Elementary is a breakout hit, some recognition was to be expected, the surprise is the number of nominations for the new show – including nominations for supporting cast members Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, and Sheryl Lee Ralph as well as lead, Quinta Brunson, who weren’t among many predictions. Chadwick Boseman (What If…?) and Jessica Walter (Archer) received posthumous nominations. Fourteen nominations for Squid Game – as popular as it has been, some recognition and nominations were expected but this far exceeded those expectations.
