Get ready to experience the power of hope and resilience with Nashville Repertory Theatre’s Violet at TPAC’s Andrew Johnson Theater. Running from May 12 – 21, 2023, this heartwarming production is a must-see for all music lovers.

“We are thrilled to present this beautiful, intimate musical to Nashville,” says Executive Director, Drew Ogle. “This is the type of show which won’t tour its original production outside of New York.  One of the vital roles of nonprofit theatre like Nashville Rep is to bring works like these into our local community.”

Based on the short story The Ugliest Pilgrim by Doris Betts, Violet, at its core, is about a young woman’s pilgrimage toward discovering inner beauty. In search of a miracle to heal her scar, Violet joins a group of strangers on a bus ride through the American South. With a touching score created by Jeanine Tesori, the writer of Fun Home, Thoroughly Modern Mille, and Shrek the Musical, that blends gospel, country, and folk music, this musical will transport you on an emotional journey filled with laughter and tears.

“We all have scars both externally and internally,” says first time guest director, Tracey Copeland Halter. “Some heal on their own, some we need help in healing. This play is about a woman on a journey to heal a physical scar. Along the way she meets a variety of people with their own scars. By the end of her journey, she realizes that her scar has already been healed, she just had to believe it.”

Violet stars Kelsey Brodeur in the title role, most recently seen at the Nashville Rep in Mary Poppins. Joining her is Mike Sallee, Jr. as Flick, Nathan Quay Thomas as Monty, Riley West as Young Violet, Matthew Carlton as Father, and a talented ensemble of actors including Piper Jones, Beth Anne Musiker, Ryan Greenawalt, Austin Jeffrey Smith, Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva, Lawson Marchetti, Yolanda Treece, and Sheila D. J. Calloway bringing the story to life on stage.

The production features a stunning score under the music direction of Randy C. Craft, Scenic Designed by Gary C. Hoff, Costumes Designed by Lori Gann-Smith, Lighting Designed by Darren Levin, Sound Designed by Timothy Grace, Musical Staging by Micah-Shane Brewer, and Stage Managed by Daniel Brewer, this production is a feast for the eyes and ears.
