With live music from The Nashville Symphony and a new generation of principal dancers, the city’s defining classical ballet event returns February 27–March 1, 2026

There are certain evenings in a city’s cultural life when the curtain rises on more than a performance. When Nashville Ballet brings Swan Lake back to Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s Jackson Hall from February 27 through March 1, 2026, it will mark the return of one of classical ballet’s most enduring dreams—and one of Nashville’s most elegant civic rituals.

Last seen on the Nashville Ballet stage in 2018, the full-length production arrives with the grandeur the work demands: Tchaikovsky’s sweeping score performed live by The Nashville Symphony, choreography by Artistic Director Emeritus Paul Vasterling, and a lineage that reaches back to the landmark stagings of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. For longtime balletgoers, it is a welcome homecoming. For newcomers, it is an initiation into the shimmering world of moonlit lakes, courtly pageantry, impossible love, and the exquisite discipline of classical dance.

Swan Lake endures because its myth feels at once ancient and immediate. Prince Siegfried encounters Odette, a Swan Queen bound by sorcery to live as a swan by day and a woman by night. Only a vow of true love can release her. Yet beneath the fairy-tale surface lies a drama of identity, illusion, betrayal, and redemption—subjects as resonant in a contemporary city as they were in the imperial theatres where the ballet first took shape.

For Nashville Ballet, the work is also a declaration of artistic scale. As the city’s resident professional ballet company, the organization has become a central force in Nashville’s expanding cultural identity, pairing classical technique with theatrical ambition. In this staging, the company’s dancers are asked not only to execute the formidable architecture of the choreography, but to inhabit its emotional weather: the trembling vulnerability of Odette, the glittering danger of Odile, the longing and uncertainty of Siegfried, and the charged atmosphere of a world suspended between enchantment and doom.

“Swan Lake holds a special place in the classical canon and in Nashville Ballet’s history,” said Nick Mullikin, Artistic Director and CEO of Nashville Ballet. “This production honors the tradition audiences expect while showcasing the power, athleticism and emotional clarity of today’s dancers in roles that define a classical career.”

That sense of arrival will be heightened by a series of principal role debuts. Lily Saito and Colette Tilinski will alternate as Odette/Odile, the ballet’s legendary dual role, while James Lankford and Jorge Emilio Peña will alternate as Prince Siegfried. Few assignments in the repertory reveal a dancer more completely. Odette/Odile demands a transformation from lyric fragility to dazzling command; Siegfried requires princely refinement, sustained strength, and the ability to carry the ballet’s moral and emotional center.

In a city often defined by its music, the return of Swan Lake is a reminder that Nashville’s performing arts ecosystem now speaks in many languages: symphonic, choreographic, theatrical, philanthropic. The lake onstage may be enchanted, but the larger story is distinctly civic—a growing city making room for beauty, discipline, and shared cultural memory.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2026, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 2 p.m.
