Nashville Soccer Club will host Club América in the Round of 16 in the Leagues Cup 2023 at 7 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at GEODIS Park.

Nashville SC reached the Round of 16 by beating FC Cincinnati 5:4 in a penalty shootout after ending regulation time level at 1-1 following a 64th minute set piece goal from Aníbal Godoy. Injury time substitute goalkeeper Elliot Panicco and veteran midfielder Dax McCarty emerged heroes after they made the only penalty stop and converted the final penalty kick, respectively.

The Boys in Gold extended their penalty shootout record to 2W-2L-0D on Aug. 4 to secure its tournament advancement. Nashville’s converted five penalties was the first time the club has been able to secure all five of them. This match was one of 18 across all Leagues Cup 2023 tournament play to go to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.

Nashville SC has faced off once before with Club América on Sept. 21, 2022 as part of a Leagues Cup showcase, where the high-scoring affair went to penalties after the two sides ended regulation level at 3-3. Nashville SC won 4:2 in penalties for its first-ever shootout victory.

The Boys in Gold are on a scoring streak that began in mid-July and has seen two goals on the road and one at home in that span. The club has spread the offensive load with these seven goals, featuring six different goal scorers in Leagues Cup 2023 play: Hany Mukhtar, Walker Zimmerman, Aníbal Godoy, Fafà Picault, Jacob Shaffelburg and Luke Haakenson.

The match has the making to be another high-scoring affair between Nashville SC and the Liga MX side, as Club América has also recorded six goals in regulation time in its Leagues Cup 2023 run. Club América will be without two key players, as the club’s starting center forward, Henry Martin, suffered a calf injury in warmups ahead of Club América’s Round of 32 match with Chicago Fire FC, and midfielder Rachard Sanchez received a straight red card for a “serious foul” in stoppage time of that same match.

Nashville SC has only faced Liga MX sides within Leagues Cup play and owns a 1W-1L-0D record in that span, recording a combined six goals scored in regulation and allowing a combined seven.

Earlier today, head coach Gary Smith and players Aníbal Godoy and Jack Maher spoke to the media about facing Club América again, and the absence of Henry Martin. B-roll from the availability can be found in the Media Resources section.

Nashville SC must win this match to remain part of Leagues Cup 2023, as the tournament has reached its single-elimination knockout stage. As with group stage, there will be no draws in this tournament. Should both sides end regulation time on level terms, both teams will immediately enter a penalty shootout to determine the winner of the match. How does Leagues Cup work?
